There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to the etiquette for wearing a button down shirt with no tie. However, as a general rule of thumb, it is generally considered more acceptable to leave the top button undone and to roll up the sleeves if you are not wearing a tie. Additionally, it is generally considered more appropriate to tuck in a button down shirt without a tie than to leave it untucked.
