For example, yesterday was my prom. My outfit, like almost every outfit I wear, was a mix of women’s and men’s clothing. My suit and undershirt were from the women’s section, while my shirt, tie, socks, and shoes were from the men’s section. The end result was something masculine, but shaped to fit the body I have. I don’t feel like it’s cross dressing for me to wear clothing that happens to be designed for women. Clothing doesn’t have a gender, after all, and women’s clothing is often cut in a way that fits me better. Wearing men’s clothing definitely isn’t cross dressing, because I am a man. In the same way, a trans women dressing like the woman she is is not cross dressing.
When a trans person actively attempts to dress and be perceived as a member of their birth assigned gender, it’s different in some ways from a cis person cross dressing. There’s a different history there, and sometimes different motivations. There are absolutely transgender drag queens and drag kings, but when I dressed as a woman, I was doing so to please my parents and to adhere to what was expected of me. That’s something common to most transgender people’s experience. A cis person who cross dresses likely wouldn’t have that motivation.
When we talk about my urge to present as a man, we aren’t talking about an urge to cross dress, but an urge to live authentically, and to dress in a way that makes me feel like my inner self. A man dressing in men’s clothing isn’t cross dressing, whether he’s cis or trans. Most transgender people do have an urge to dress in a way that reflects their gender identity, for what are likely some of the same reasons why you dress in a way that reflects your gender identity. Wear what you are comfortable in and what you would like to wear. If that includes full face makeup and high heels then go for it, and if it’s a comfortable shirt with jeans that’s okay too. Gender representation does not equal gender identity, just be yourself or who you’d like to be. What you are describing is what used to be called being “trans-sexual” or “transvestite”, a person who gets pleasure (sometimes sexual pleasure) by dressing in clothing usually worn by the opposite gender. Also known as “cross-dressing”. I used quotation marks because I don’t know if these terms are now considered valid.
