This is very much an American thing; a society which seems to believe any man revealing any skin but his hands and head to be indecency exposed! (Don’t take me literally here.) Keep in mind there’s a difference between a button down and a dress shirt. Dress shirts usually come very long (getting close to the thigh area) because they are meant to be tucked in (refer to top half of photo below). Button downs, however, can be worn untucked and come in a shorter length (refer to bottom half of photo below).
Dress shirts usually come pre-folded, have more conservative prints and patterns, are longer in length, and are usually placed near suiting or ties in shops. Button downs are usually hung, come in a number of patterns, shorter in length, sometimes have tiny buttons on the collars, and are in the casual section of a store. One thing to keep in mind is the length of the shirt. If the shirt is too long (be it a dress shirt or a button down), it can throw off your proportions and look unflattering. A nice rule of thumb for length: the shirt should fall near the middle of your zipper. I’m assuming you’ve seen some guys wear a shirt untucked with a blazer and want to try the look? They are most likely wearing a button down. If done wrong, this style can look sloppy. Avoid looking sloppy by following the length rule and go for a fitted blazer with a fun texture or pattern. A blazer that looks like it came from a suit might throw off the casual untucked look, however a fun blazer will make it look like it was done with intention.
What happens if you love or already own a dress shirt, but hate tucking in shirts? Get a tailor to shorten the shirt for you. Additionally, I choose non-sheer fabrics for my shirts (outside of Voile for summer) so I never have that problem. For a contemporary shirt you may have 3 or 4 inches of ease in the chest. Slim shirts will have 2.5 inches or so and extra slim will have 2 inches. The slimmer the model the more taper towards the waist of the shirt. The shirt should fit close but not tight. No binding or bulging. It’s like shirting was hung from your shoulders and gently followed the shape of your body. You hardly know its there but it is. Not second skin or sausage casing tight.
