The government of the UK for the majority of the last 70 years has been the Conservative party. The last time they won an election in Scotland was the 1950s. These are longstanding political differences, highlighted by the Brexit vote. The independence movement gathered steam when people can watch a neighbouring independent country, with a similar population, and similar resources, become one of the richest countries in the world in the space of a few decades. Add to that the complete mess that is Brexit, and more people are seeing Westminster for the hopelessly outdated, undemocratic, and rotten edifice that it is. At the time of the Act of Union, Scotland had a fifth of the population of England. After 300 years of all the benefits of our “glorious union” it’s a tenth.
The Union is not good for Scotland. More people are realising that as time goes by. We “nationalists’ just want to take our place in the world as a normal country, and not being represented by the country next door that we quite often don’t agree with. For the same reason that England, France or the USA has their own teams – to compete in football tournaments or friendlies internationally – Wales has its own team too.
