“My job is to make people happy, to spark emotion, and share artistic choices even beyond fashion. I love making the festival all about what I consider the typical Mediterranean generosity, a chance to talk about all kinds of creativity, like authors, dance, and music,” he said. “For me, existing outside of the usual codes is exciting and reassuring in an industry that’s becoming more sterile: there was this promise of a new world post-Covid, but I get this crazy impression that things are worse than before. Here, we do things differently and people are happy nonetheless—and maybe they’ll start questioning the way things are.” Changing the status quo—by revisiting handcraft techniques and using materials already at their disposal—has been a running theme for designers over the past several years. This year, however, those themes reached a new level with sophisticated pieces worked, variously, in raw raffia, salvaged yarn, denim, cotton, wool, neckties, or old lingerie—even LEDs and (yes) garden hoses, to improbably beguiling effect.
To support circularity, the Festival revealed a new €10,000 grant sponsored by L’Atelier des Matières, a Chanel satellite that specializes in collecting and revalorizing unused or unsold materials and clothing, and offering them new life. One finalist took that philosophy in a far more literal direction any any of her peers: In a collection titled “Unwearable,” the Finnish designer Sini Saavala used 90% upcycled materials like sweat-tinged cotton undershirts and period-stained vintage lingerie to “create something powerful out of something unwearable.” Her ultra-revealing, pieced-together gowns embellished with Lemarié flowers in strategic places (atop the butt crack, say) took home the first-ever L’Atelier des Matières prize.
With a collection called “Resurrectio,” German designer Valentin Lessner made a compelling enough show of revisiting tradition—in this case, by drawing on his grandparents’ and great-grandparents’ tailoring heritage, and using some fabrics that had been sleeping in his family’s archives since the ’70s—repurposing old automobile tarp or garnishing vintage trousers with a Yeti-like mohair supplied by Ateliers Montex, that he scooped both the 19M Métiers d’Art Prize and the Mercedes-Benz Eco-Reponsible Prize. While showcasing tomorrow’s big names has always been the backbone of this festival, founder Jean-Pierre Blanc noted that, the more time passes, the more he sees fashion as only the beginning.
