My best friend stood up for someone else in like 3rd grade not long after that policy began, got suspended for the week, his dad high fived him, took him for ice cream and to go see whatever Star Wars movie had just come out. My four children have all gone to a public elementary school that requires uniforms – a red or blue polo shirt, and blue or khaki shortspants. In the same district about two miles away is another public elem school that does not require uniforms, and we have many friends whose children have attended there. By far, there’s less bullying at the school with uniforms. Anecdotal, but still valid, I think. The caveat is that there’s only less bullying in terms of money, status, and clothing choice. Kids are kids, and there’s always a tendency for kids to point out which can turn into bullying differences. The kid who wears glasses, or the kid who talks with a lisp, or the kid who’s short for his age may still get picked on regardless of whether he’s wearing a uniform or a Vans t-shirt. Because they are still immature, naive and also very excited at the same time after they graduate and they feel that they have been free from all pressures they had before in high school. High schools in Indonesia are very competitive now and I understand many Indonesian High School students get depressed during their years of study.
I went to Senior High School 67 Halim Jakarta 17 years ago and I still recall the school issued warning to students who would stain their uniforms, they would be sanctioned firmly and the school meant it by calling some Provost from Indonesia Airforce to patrol around the school area. The result no student who graduated daring to stain their uniforms. We never had uniforms but i always though the kids who went to the private school looked proper smart wearing collared shirts under their pullovers.
