In 1968, Gernreich took a year off. Returning to the business, he began to focus more on furniture and food, causing his fashion output to decline somewhat. When he sews clothes, his concern is comfort, authenticity and dress code for both men and women. Always thinking ahead, he experimented with Combined Fashion, which features sound, heat and laser-secured seams, according to The Daily Press.
Meanwhile, he is firmly against the retrograde trends that are taking over fashion. “Nostalgia worries me. It’s a drug,” he told The San Francisco Examiner in 1974. “Nostalgia is a kind of false security, seeking out the past because we fear the present and the future. Watergate and the chaos of the world are part of it as everyone tries to step back into history. It is also part of a revolt against the dehumanizing aspects of technological progress. But it’s not realistic and I will continue to resist romanticizing the past.”
In 1964, Gernreich launched a revolution from within, creating the No-Bra bra for Exquisite Form. At the time, bras were heavy artillery that imposed shape. Gernreich’s second leather design is made of sheer, bias-cut nylon mesh with thin straps (though they only come in size 34B). The idea is to follow the natural shape of the body. Over time, Gernreich would phase that out, introducing sticky vinyl patches and panties and then favoring the foundation-free one. “As a designer, he is one of the most powerful forces of American fashion and perhaps the greatest enemy that modesty has,” noted one author at the time. Gernreich not only introduced monokinis but also favored mini skirts and liberal use of cropped lines, all beautifully dressed by his muse Peggy Moffitt.
