I prefer to wear short-sleeved shirts when I exercise because I like to have my arms free to move around. I also find that long-sleeved shirts tend to get in the way and are more likely to cause me to overheat. A few years ago I visited Jeddah and went round the shopping Mall with a male friend (British) without wearing the hijab. But, I was extremely well covered wearing trousers and a loose top with long sleeves. Of course, had we wanted to go into a mosque that would have been different. A head covering would have been absolutely essential – but Saudi Arabia is no different to mosques in most other countries in this respect. Not at all. We love seeing expats and visitors embracing our culture and trying out our habits and traditions. I highly recommend foreigners in the UAE to try and spend a day in a Kandura, or Abaya for ladies. Just wear it and go to a mall have a meal and while at it, practice your arabic with the people you interact with.
