I prefer to wear short-sleeved shirts when I exercise because I like to have my arms free to move around. I also find that long-sleeved shirts tend to get in the way and are more likely to cause me to overheat. A few years ago I visited Jeddah and went round the shopping Mall with a male friend (British) without wearing the hijab. But, I was extremely well covered wearing trousers and a loose top with long sleeves. Of course, had we wanted to go into a mosque that would have been different. A head covering would have been absolutely essential – but Saudi Arabia is no different to mosques in most other countries in this respect. Not at all. We love seeing expats and visitors embracing our culture and trying out our habits and traditions. I highly recommend foreigners in the UAE to try and spend a day in a Kandura, or Abaya for ladies. Just wear it and go to a mall have a meal and while at it, practice your arabic with the people you interact with.
Since I am a female influencer, I am often asked about the dress code for mosques. The answer is that it depends on the mosque. Some mosques are more liberal and allow women to wear short sleeves and long pants. However, other mosques are more conservative and require women to wear full-length dresses or skirts. There is no specific dress code for men in Saudi Arabia, but they are generally expected to dress conservatively in public. This means avoiding shorts, and opting for long pants and shirts that cover the chest and shoulders.
It is an Arab/Bedouin custom and no one obliged to follow it. Prophet advised us to cover head. So it up to individual what way he adopt to follow this advice. Whether by wearing turban or cap or Uqqal. But prophet Sunnah was to wear turban. So Saudis adopt all ways to follow this advice either by wearing turban or cap or uqqal. There’s no right answer to this question – it’s entirely up to your personal style! If you feel confident and comfortable in a long sleeve with shorts or a short sleeve with long pants, then absolutely go for it!
