Fit is again important and bagginess is a bad thing. Sleeves should cover at most half of your bicep. The end of your shirt should never be longer than the midway point of your fly. Get some solid colored V-neck shirts. This may be very strange to you (I used to think v-necks were effeminate or gay) but a V neck doesn’t have to be a super low cut, chest hair fiesta. A subtle V shape is flattering. Each shirt shouldn’t be more than $10-15. If v-necks aren’t your thing, that’s cool too. Just follow the same principles for a crew neck shirt, which is the regular kind of t-shirt. For a casual look that still looks like you put some effort into it, go for some polo shirts! They are great during the summer time when button down shirts are too hot. Again, go for a variety of colors. Express sells decent polos, as does Gap.
Levi’s jeans are fairly entry level and while not fantastic quality, their fit is dependable. They are reasonably priced ($50-ish) but you can easily spend $200 on things like “raw denim” or “selvedge” jeans if you wanted. But a good pair of Levi’s will do you well. Look into different colors/washes in the following fits. 514 – Slim straight jeans. This is a safe and conservative fit for young guys of all body types. They won’t be ground breaking but infinitely better than crappy boot cut jeans. 511 – Skinny jeans. Slim fit with a leg that tapers. They can look great on skinnier guys but feel uncomfortable if you have thicker thighs. Try them on and see. You didn’t mention what kind of shirt you had but if you are like me, you have tons of graphic tees lying around from high school. Graphic tees and tees emblazoned with brand logos are not ideal!
Now we get to the interesting bits! These shirts are what you may have called “dress shirts” but not all buttoned shirts are dressy. The rule tends to be thicker cloth = casual, thinner cloth = formal. Dress shirts are typically longer so they have to be tucked in. But a casual button down is designed so it doesn’t have to be tucked. This is great for casual wear. A good shirt will have sleeves that go slightly past your wrist, at the base of your hand. Make sure the shoulder seams are at the end of your shoulder but not past that. You can stock up on some casual buttoned shirts like this. You can wear them on jeans if you like. Stick with versatile colors like gray and navy. J Crew and Land’s End Canvas are good sources of such shirts. Price range: $30-50
