T-shirts were first introduced in United States sometime around the time of the Spanish World War. They were given to members of the U.S. Navy to be worn as undergarment beneath their uniforms.Previously called a union suit, the first form of t-shirt was from New York. A union suit was a one-piece garment in white color with buttons in front. First printed t-shirts probably were t-shirts in the Wizard of Oz (1939 film) and Air Corps Gunnery School T-shirt (LIFE magazine cover, July 13th, 1942). As slip-on garments without buttons, the earliest T-shirt dates back to sometime between the 1898 Spanish–American War and 1913, when the U.S. Navy began issuing them as undergarments. These were a crew-necked, short-sleeved, white cotton undershirt to be worn under a uniform.[1] The inexpensive cotton and easy to clean garment became the shirt of choice by mothers for their sons as outerwear for chores and play. By the 1920’s ‘T-shirt’ became an official American-English word in the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary.
