Cut around the neck taking away the binding. Measure how low you want the necklineto be. Fold the front in half and cut a V leaving a 1/2” to spare. You can either leave it rough, you can do a decorative stitch, or you can get a binding to sew around the neck. Please understand that this answer is going to sound snarky but I mean it with all sincerity. If you want a t-shirt quilt, but you don’t want to sew anything your best bet is going to be to hire someone to make your t-shirt quilt. I hope you don’t think that answer is a cop-out. I have put a lot of thought into this and that is my best answer. Even if you were to cut your shirts into squares and use an adhesive (stitch witchery) to hold them together you would, at best, get a blanket that might last a couple of years. In the back of my head I keep trying to figure out a way to cut the squares large enough to allow them to have ‘tassles’ of fabric hanging from all sides that you could tie together. Sort of like those no-sew fleece blankets..
You can sew whatever you want into your comforter: torn panties, pictures of old boyfriends, old report cards, your mom’s socks, used condoms (rinse first), torn panty hose; there is no end to your opportunities. Personally , I feel round neck t-shirts are a bit child like to wear. It is good for in-house wear or beaches or holiday but not in colleges. On the other hand polo t-shirts look more mature and cool to me. Fusible Interfacing – t-shirts are mostly made of stretchy fabric, and can pull out of shape quite quickly (especially when you use a sewing machine to stitch each square together). I find using fusible interfacing stabilizes the fabric, and doesn’t interfere with the final product. Note: the interfacing mustn’t be woven, and should only have the ‘glue’ on one side. Also, make sure you have enough for each and every square, because if you need to buy more, the chances of you not being able to get the same kind are quite high. There’s nothing more frustrating then starting a project using fusible interfacing, then having to buy more – and it shows..
Cutting the t-shirts you’ll use – this is actually easier than most people think, and you can use these guidelines for more than just quilting with t-shirts. Cut the back and front of the t-shirt so that it makes two pieces and then iron the fabric to make it smooth – I usually pre-wash my fabrics to make sure the colors don’t ‘bleed’. Don’t cut the t-shirts into squares just yet at this point. Preparing the t-shirt fabric for quilting: using the fusible interfacing, iron this on to each piece of t-shirt. then, cut the squares according to the size you want. It’s so much easier to do it this way because it makes handling the fabric easier, and sewing it a pleasure. Note: measure, measure, and measure again.
