I am with Threadless and TeePublic now, I have tried TeeSpring, but found their web site harder to upload designs and set up products. The fact that TeeSpring limits you to 15 colors regardless of how many different styles of shirt you have is silly. All the others let you have all colors for all styles of shirt, not 15 split among the different styles. I would suggest you upload your designs to several sites and see which ones get you sales without you doing a lot of promotion. Some sites, TeeSpring included, will not help you in any way with marketing and you will not have any sales without promoting your designs.
If you are talking about a service mark for a major corporation in the making then it is worth contacting a lawyer that handles branding and protection from the outset of your company. While you can open a shop on Shopify and have a third party service print and ship your t-shirt designs on demand, there is little benefit to doing this over using TeeSpring or Threadless for fulfillment. I started with a shop on Shopify, but after a couple months, I realized it was a lot more work than was needed. I design my own shirts, and you can buy designs from third parties, so the fact that you can create a shop with existing designs printed in China was not very useful to me. In addition, I found Shopify to be a pain to use and paying fees was not helpful while starting out. I went as far as setting up integration with Etsy and Amazon, which was extremely painful to manage and found that Amazon will bury your shirts until you get a certain amount of traffic on your own anyway.
Do you have an intellectual property law firm lined up to go after counterfeiters? Probably not, too costly. The amount you will make on a design really doesn’t warrant hiring law firms to protect your property, that is reserved for products that are worth millions. What if the counterfeiter is overseas? or on the other side of the country? In many cases you have to take them to court in their home turf. Lawyers do not work cheaply. So that’s why you can get protection, but enforcement is a pain that can cost more than you will make. You can send cease and desist letters via a lawyer that can stop a copy cat shirt, or do it on your own. But lets get back to making money. Sell it now, sell it as deep as you can.
