Zed: United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Zimbabwe, (their country starts with the letter after all), Jamaica, India, Pakistan, etc, etc. It all goes back to the American Revolutionary War and Noah Webster wanting to establish a standard of US spelling distinct from that of the “old country”. In my country, Canada, we had no such compulsion, and therefore “zee” is often stigmatised (most Canadians surveyed use zed and it’s taught in schools).
But ask any other foreign-language speaker, and chances are he/she will say Australian English is close enough to British English but not so much to American English or Canadian English. I’m not British, and I hear and read amongst quite a bit. I assume it is pretty much international English — certainly not just British. It has a subtly different use from among. It is used with the meaning ‘selected from’ while among simply means ‘part of’ or something like it. Scots people are British, Welsh people are British, English people are British, Norhern Irish people are British. Many immigrants from all over the World are British, as they have chosen to take out British Citizenship. So as an Englishman I call myself “English” and at the same time a British citizen. If you’re looking for consistency, you’re looking in the wrong place. On either side of the Pond, you will find some who use ‘an historic’ and some who use ‘a historic.’ Historically, the ‘a historic’ version is older, the “an historic” version a ‘correction’ made on the assumption that ‘history’ and its derived forms came to English from French, in which the ‘h’ would have been silent and the definite article with is the reduced “l’”, By analogy, then, in English if the ‘h’ is silent, it would take the indefinite article ‘an’. But we can argue as long as anybody wants over which is ‘correct’ in English, nad the answer doesn’t depend onn particular geographical dialects.
British accent: every sound is carefully carved out of cold butter by a slightly annoyed lady with a pocket knife. Then there is this other British accent which is not susceptible to description. Australian accent: sounds like two 8-year old boys playing fort and making up cool words and expressions and trying to sound all mysterious and grown up. Take the common Asian surname ‘Khan’.and add a ‘T’ to the end. Or think of how much you dislike your uncles wife so you stick a ‘C’ before saying ‘Aunt’. Distance. The same thing causes the difference in accent between London English and Newcastle English, or between New York English and Atlanta English. Just distance.
