I think people wear T-shirts with a message printed on them because they want to start a conversation. It’s a way to get people talking about something that is important to them. One of the (many) bands that I follow on FB recently posted about some new T-shirts that they are going to be selling. They commented that this particular design would look slightly different on larger T-shirts as the screen print was the same for all sizes. This is inspired by the original large 101 Damnations spot t-shirt. It should be noted that on some of the larger sizes the spots will look slightly smaller (simply because the screen print is the same design for all). Because a graphic t-shirt is a statement. It either has something written on it that catches the eye of passers-by or it has a logo or picture that interests the wearer. I’m finding that this is a common sentiment admist the fashion trends of this generation of youth/young adults. Some possible translations: I know that when I was a kid my mother and her friends didn’t wear T shirts. I guess later in the 70’s it became more popular to wear very casual clothes. I imagine it somewhat depended on the area where they lived. I’m glad women now dress more comfortably on a regular basis. I guess that men have worn T shirts for a long time.
There are a few reasons people might wear a T-shirt with a print on it. Maybe they want to support a cause or team, or make a statement. Or maybe they just think the shirt is cool or funny. Personally, I think it’s a great way to show your personality and make a fashion statement. We used to wear vests / undershirts until 1965 when white nylon shirts became popular. A vest was visible through the nylon shirt. That didn’t look cool so we stopped wearing them, so in cold weather, rather than freeze we would wear a white T-shirt underneath our shirts instead. Two years later n 1967 we started dressing like hippies so the collar and tie was discarded in favour of more casual clothing as we still wear today.
