You should wear swim briefs when and where others expect you to wear them. Otherwise, don’t wear them. Swimming naked is a lot more enjoyable then wearing anything in the water. The density of the weave, the thickness and color of the fabric, and the cut of the garment are the major factors in the functionality of UV protective clothing. The difference between clothing marked with a UV protection factor and clothing that is not marked is that the marked clothing has been lab tested and verified. Also, regulations require that UV protective marked clothing must cover a certain proportion of the body. It’s kind of a normal thing for guys not to wear shirts while swimming. We guys can choose to wear a shirt or not while swimming. Most men go shirtless when they go swimming, it’s just a normal thing. My thoughts are, that there’s no problem with guys going shirtless while swimming. My chest is hairy, and I still go shirtless when I swim.
Yes, I have seen climbers wearing short-sleeved shirts in hot weather conditions. I think that they do this because it allows them to stay cooler and more comfortable while they are climbing. Yes. But be sure it has a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) rating. UPF is like an SPF rating for sunscreen, except it’s for clothing. I think UPF 50 means it reduces the amount of UV that gets through to 2% (i.e., 1/50th). It’s important to look for this because some fabrics become less protective when wet. So get a rash guard with a UPF tag. Most clothing sold with a UV rating has actually been tested and its benefits quantified. Normally the fabric will be wetted through and stretched out before testing in order to imitate the most extreme conditions in which it is likely to be used. A good denim shirt, even when wet, will provide good UV protection. But a white shirt might not. And if you want the comfort and performance of stretch, then you want a shirt that has been tested while it was stretched and wet (both of which conditions will degrade its performance).
Rashguards have evolved far beyond their use in surfing to protect the skin against rashes from contact with the wax on surfboards. They also protect against sunburn, add enough flotation to bring you to the surface if necessary, provide marketing space for brandnames, and can be a fashion statement. I like to wear white ones because a) they are the coolest color in the sun and b) the contrast with my exposed skin makes my exposed skin look darker while hiding my lily white torso, so I look more local than I really am while bodysurfing or surfing in Hawaii. So, no, they are not weird. Allowing yourself to be sunburned needlessly is not a healthy or pleasant practice. Also, if they help anybody get some healthy exercise because they otherwise would feel exposed to ridicule – that is a good thing.
