You should wear swim briefs when and where others expect you to wear them. Otherwise, don’t wear them. Swimming naked is a lot more enjoyable then wearing anything in the water. The density of the weave, the thickness and color of the fabric, and the cut of the garment are the major factors in the functionality of UV protective clothing. The difference between clothing marked with a UV protection factor and clothing that is not marked is that the marked clothing has been lab tested and verified. Also, regulations require that UV protective marked clothing must cover a certain proportion of the body. It’s kind of a normal thing for guys not to wear shirts while swimming. We guys can choose to wear a shirt or not while swimming. Most men go shirtless when they go swimming, it’s just a normal thing. But be sure it has a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) rating. UPF is like an SPF rating for sunscreen, except it’s for clothing. I think UPF 50 means it reduces the amount of UV that gets through to 2% (i.e., 1/50th). It’s important to look for this because some fabrics become less protective when wet. So get a rash guard with a UPF tag. Most clothing sold with a UV rating has actually been tested and its benefits quantified. A good denim shirt, even when wet, will provide good UV protection. But a white shirt might not.
