A shirtwaist is a shirtdress with a seam at the waistline. A shirtdress does not usually have a waist seam, but it often has a self-fabric tie belt or belt loops for holding a belt in place. Other variations I have seen in shirtdresses are that the front placket may not button from neck to hem but may be more like a polo shirt placket which stops mid-chest. As well, some shirt dresses have the same curved hem as a man’s dress shirt designed to facilitate tucking into trousers, although this is obviously not necessary for a woman’s dress which falls well below hip level.
That said, I think your assumption might be a little off. I don’t think all men like solid white dress shirts. Having been around them for most of my career, I’ve noticed my colleagues’ would prefer some type of color or pattern over white, although virtually everyone who wears dress shirts at work owns at least one or two. Just like a man’s dress shirt, a shirtdress has a collar, button placket from neck to hem, short sleeves or long sleeves with a buttoned cuff. The back usually has a yoke (a piece that goes across the back from shoulder to shoulder, and the lower back section attached to the yoke has a single pleat for wearing ease. The front of the shirtdress may have a patch pocket. Unlike a man’s short or long sleeve shirt, a woman’s shirtdress may be sleeveless. Instead of stopping at the hip as a man’s shirt does, the fabric of the shirtdress continues to the knees or lower calf, plus or minus a few inches depending on the style.
Would I recommend always wearing a white shirt? Nah. It’s super cute on my grandpa, but I think all of his shirts have stains now (mostly Cheeto ones— the man is crazy for those things). The stains wouldn’t be as noticeable if he wore shirts that weren’t white. I guess if a person was careful enough when wearing white shirts and used a good stain treatment when doing laundry, it might be okay to always wear white shirts as far as stains go. I think that a solid white shirt, with an high-end fabric and interesting weave or pattern, looks really elegant. I’d speculate what ‘many’ men find appealing about a white shirt is its versatility. It will match virtually any tie or any suit. The same cannot be said with colored, pinstriped, checkered or other non solid dress shirt designs.
