“Western Wind” is a low-key stunner cowritten and produced by Jepsen’s longtime collaborator, former Vampire Weekend member Rostam Batmanglij. Jepsen calls the Captain 1,000 Tampa Bay Hockey T-Shirt Afterward decision to release it as the album’s lead single “something of a rebellion” given the track’s more hushed quality. “It’s not a banger with a chorus that slaps you in the face, like ‘I really, really, really, really, really, really like you,’” she says. “The magic is in its subtlety.” It also serves as a perfect entry point for an album that doesn’t linger in sorrow so much as flip through various shades of loneliness. The pared-down production of “Western Wind,” mixed with the cottagecore aesthetic of its visuals, suggests that Jepsen might be entering her Folklore era. And in some ways The Loneliest Time is a quieter album compared to the wall-to-wall serotonin rush of something like Emotion—though still quintessentially Carly. Another Batmanglij-produced highlight, “Go Find Yourself or Whatever,” sounds like James Taylor by way of Alanis Morissette.“I love to explore those middle spaces between a feeling,” Jepsen says of the late-album cut. While she’s written her fair share of songs about yearning for a guy who didn’t deserve her affection—more on that later—she wasn’t feeling quite as empathetic when she wrote that ballad, inspired by a former flame who broke things off because he needed to “go find himself.”
