Once seen as the epitome of bad taste, sheer fabrics and risqué dresses have, in recent years, become a key component of some of the world’s chicest wardrobes. Yes, really. If you need further proof, Rita Ora on the GLAMOUR’s Women of the Year Awards 2022 red carpet, in partnership with Samsung, is all the evidence you need. Rita looked unreal as she arrived for the star-studded event, which honoured the gamechangers and feminist heroes who inspire us every single day. The awards are back with a bang for the first time in five years to celebrate the event’s 16th anniversary and to mark the occasion, Rita certainly brought her sartorial A-game. When done right, ‘nearly-naked’ looks strike that hard-to-reach sweet spot between being sartorially sensual and super chic without even a hint of awkwardness or discomfort for either the wearer or the observer. And – it’s fair to say – Rita looked very comfortable in her sheer gown.
Nensi Dojaka continues to pioneer an empowering take on the ‘nearly naked’ trend with these super sexy runway looks “It was kind of crazy,” Nensi laughed as we discuss the numbers over Zoom. “I still can’t really believe it… I don’t know how or why (it happened)!” But unlike other designers who may let fame and excitement overtake their lives, Nensi is an astute businesswoman who cleverly compartmentalises her career. “I’m very good at leaving the excitement behind and doing the next thing. I have had moments that I was so involved in everything, I didn’t feel like myself. You start to lose yourself when you are around so many people that are part of your job and the fashion industry.” Nevertheless that very same industry is quick to pile on the plaudits. Libby Page, Market Director at NET-A-PORTER is a fan. “Nensi has had an incredible year since winning the LVMH prize and it’s been an absolute joy to see her collections go from strength to strength. Spring Summer 23 was her best yet – it was so exciting to see, full of fresh and elevated ideas… that took the show to a whole new level.” Nensi was born in 1993 and grew up in Albania with one sister, before moving to London in her late teens to study lingerie design at London College of Fashion. She interned at Peter Pilotto and Fyodor Golan before completing her MA at renowned fashion school Central St Martins. Nensi’s parents must have spotted her nascent love for fashion. “When I was 15 my dad bought me my first branded dress for my birthday – it was this tiny Miu Miu dress and it stuck in my head, I loved it!” Her family are still the people Nensi calls first when she needs to talk or has big news to share. “I’m very close to my parents and sister – and of course to my boyfriend,” she revealed.
The incredible actor continued: “We are often made to feel that we are lucky to have access to certain spaces. That we have achieved things because of positive discrimination, a tickbox exercise. It is to shrink us; to stop us asking for more and demanding better. It certainly kept me insecure. “We as women know how hard it is – we have to fight and work for everything we have, whether that is equal pay, equal work or body autonomy. As I speak to you in real time, I am sick of that. I don’t want it anymore. I reject that. Me accepting this award is me rejecting that. Me acknowledging that I have worked so hard. I have sacrificed so much, as we all have to be in this room. I am not going to let society take this achievement from me. I encourage every woman out there to do the same. Have pride in evetthing that you do and eveything that you are… because you are so deserving.”
